Will Rain Dirty My Clean Windows?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from clients: "Should I wait until the rainy season is over before having my windows cleaned?" It's a reasonable concern, but the answer might surprise you.

Rain Is Actually Clean

Rainwater itself is essentially distilled water. It doesn't contain the minerals, dirt, and debris that make your windows look dirty in the first place. When rain falls on a clean window, it sheets off cleanly and evaporates without leaving spots or streaks.

So What Makes Windows Dirty?

The spots and streaks you see after rain aren't caused by the rain itself. They're caused by the dirt, dust, pollen, and mineral deposits that were already on the glass before it rained. When rain hits a dirty window, it mixes with that existing grime and redistributes it as it dries, creating those familiar spots and runs.

Clean Windows + Rain = Still Clean Windows

Once your windows have been professionally cleaned — with all the built-up dirt, oils, and mineral deposits removed — rain simply runs off the clean glass. You may notice water on the window during a storm, but once it dries, your windows will look just as clean as they did before the rain.

When Rain Can Be a Problem

There are a few exceptions worth noting:

• Muddy splashback: If rain causes mud to splash up from the ground onto ground-floor windows, that can leave marks. This is a splash issue, not a rain issue.
• Construction or pollution nearby: If there's dust from a nearby construction site or heavy pollution in the air, rain can carry those particles onto your windows.
• Sprinkler overspray: Often confused with rain damage, sprinkler water contains minerals that leave hard water spots. This is a separate issue from rain.
