Window Wisdom: Tips for Keeping Your Glass Sparkling

After 36 years of cleaning windows professionally, I've picked up a few things about what keeps glass looking great between professional cleanings. Here are my top tips for homeowners.

1. Don't Clean Windows in Direct Sunlight

This is the number one mistake people make. When you clean windows in direct sunlight, the cleaning solution evaporates too quickly, leaving streaks and residue behind. Clean your windows on a cloudy day, or work on the shaded side of the house first.

2. Skip the Paper Towels

Paper towels leave lint and can cause streaking. Instead, use a clean microfiber cloth or a professional-quality squeegee. A squeegee with a good rubber blade will give you the same streak-free results the pros get.

3. Clean the Frames and Sills First

If you clean the glass first and then wipe down the frames, dirty water from the frames will run down onto your freshly cleaned glass. Always start with the frames, tracks, and sills, then move to the glass.

4. Use the Right Solution

You don't need expensive specialty cleaners. A few drops of dish soap in a bucket of water works great for most windows. Avoid using too much soap — a little goes a long way. Too much soap leaves a film that actually attracts more dirt.

5. Watch Out for Hard Water Spots

If you have sprinklers that hit your windows, you'll likely develop hard water mineral deposits over time. These white, hazy spots won't come off with regular cleaning. They require a specialized mineral deposit remover or professional treatment. The best solution is to adjust your sprinklers so they don't spray the glass.

6. Don't Forget the Screens

Dirty window screens filter dirt onto your glass every time the wind blows or it rains. Remove your screens periodically and give them a gentle scrub with soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse and let them dry before reinstalling.
